London Viola Player, Violinist & Arranger For Hire

"An excellent performer that you can’t take your eyes off" - Jamie Goddard, The Zoots

"Martin is a highly talented violin player in all kinds of genres" - Elaine Samuels, Kindred Spirit

"You are my number one top of list right-hand go-to man" - Scutty Lee, The Etiquette Orchestra

I’m Martin Ash, a freelance professional musician based in London, UK.

  • violist
  • violinist
  • arranger
  • mandolin / voice / other instruments
  • dep work
  • pit bands
  • weddings / functions / etc.
  • pick-up bands
  • recording sessions
  • all styles: classical (orchestral, chamber, etc.), musical theatre, folk, jazz, country, bluegrass, blues, pop/rock/singer-songwriter, etc.
  • fluent sightreader and improviser, confident working from chords, playing by ear and writing my own parts

I have ample experience playing on minimal rehearsal (particularly in orchestras and function / wedding string quartets), and joining in with function bands for an extra Irish folk or country feel, and studio recording, including overdubbing and multitracking.

Besides one-off freelance work and some solo performing, I am also active with:
a roaming acoustic wedding / function trio
a covers and folk duo
a wedding / function and concert string ensemble
a gypsy jazz band
a folk-rock originals band

I’m also able to produce / transcribe written parts and master scores from MIDI files (anything from a solo instrument up to full orchestra!), while arranging / orchestrating for live instruments and players, and the forces you actually have available even if they’re not the same as the tracks on your demo recording, in the same process.

I double on mandolin and voice (baritone / choral bass), and can mix and match according to what you want.

Elsewhere on the site and my Soundcloud page and Youtube channel, you can find samples of my work as a performer and arranger, testimonials, my CVcontact details and more. Please get in touch to discuss any potential jobs – reasonable rates assured.

My availability can be checked and inquiries made through MAS or directly.

  1. Thanks Gaz – would never have picked that up without a heads-up, and nice to have it from a fellow Merseysider (even if I moved away long ago). Play on!
